History of Covenant
Celebrating over 30 Years of Community Service!
Home Health care, the oldest tradition of health care delivery in this country, has now become the choice of a new generation who seeks high quality, cost-effective alternatives for themselves, their parents and their children.
Covenant Home Care is proud to have been providing medical home health care services to our communities for over 30 years. In 1976, upon the recommendation of the Council of Priests, and with the support of the Diocese of Allentown, the decision was made to form a Holy Family Nursing Services. Holy Family was created to assist and provide medical home care for the homebound elderly in that service area. Development was assigned to Monsignor McHale of Holy Family Manor with the assistance of Sister Audrey Kimbar. As a result of their efforts, in 1977, the agency began serving patients of Schuylkill County as “Holy Family Nursing Services Home Health Care Agency”. That same year, the agency became Medicare-certified.
The agency had continued to grow in Schuylkill County and in 1986 the decision was made to establish a Berks County branch, which began serving patients that same year. In 1987, the name was changed to “Holy Family Home Health Care”. In the following years the agency became an incorporated Entity and received directions through its Board of Directors from our affiliated Catholic hospitals. From 1994 to 1995 the agency received Medicare hospice certification and changed its name to “Holy Family Home Health and Hospice” to identify the new service. Holy Family’s vision for care and service to the community was the force behind a revitalization plan. During this time services in Berks County were provided under St. Joseph Hospital as “St. Joseph Home Health and Hospice”. By the year 2000 services would again be provided in Berks and Schuylkill counties under it’s new and current name “Covenant Home Care”.
St. Joseph Hospital teamed with Consolidated Health Services in May 21012 to manage the operations of Covenant Home Care. Consolidated Health Services specializes in home care and hospice, and offers chronic care management programs targeted to improving the quality of life for patients.
Consolidated Health Services operates 33 home care, hospice and staffing offices throughout the United States, and is a direct affiliated to Catholic Health initiatives, a nation nonprofit, faith-based health organization with headquarters located in Denver, Colorado. Catholic Health Initiatives operates in 20 states and includes 73 hospitals, 40 long term care, assisted and residential living facilities, two community health services organizations, in addition to home health agencies.
