Ian O’Rourke Scholarship
in Patient Safety
The scholarship is named in honour of the late Dr Ian O’Rourke AO, Chief Executive Officer of the Institute for Clinical Excellence (2002 – 2004).
Dr O’Rourke was a surgeon, educator, academic and researcher and was passionate about the work he undertook with Aboriginal communities, at the Redfern Medical Centre, in far north Queensland, and the Northern Territory where he worked for five years.
The Ian O’Rourke Scholarship is designed to allow participants to develop better skills in integrating evidence from research in health care quality and safety policy and programs.
The aim of the scholarship is to enable successful applicants to:
- have advanced skills in using research to improve quality and safety in health care
- develop expertise in evidence-based practice and policy
- network with national and international experts in quality and safety and patient-based care who will be available for ongoing cross-national exchange and collaboration
- become future leaders of quality and safety in patient care.
Under the guidance of a nominated local mentor, Ian O’Rourke scholars will investigate an issue of interest, based on improving quality and safety in health care.
The Scholarship will include a visit to a nominated national or international agency with expertise in the chosen field. Successful applicants will receive funding, up to a maximum of $10,000.
The Ian O Rourke Scholarship is open to all employees of NSW Health facilities and/or agencies and employees of NSW-based academic institutions. Applicants should be undertaking or intending to undertake a relevant PhD, Masters or other degree or diploma at an accredited Australian academic institution during the period of the scholarship.
Applicants can use the Ian O’Rourke Scholarship as a supplement to an existing or prospective scholarship.
